In the previous session on online videos you learned how to search for videos, how to rate them and write a comment on the video. In this session you are going to look at how to embed and download videos. Are you ready for showtime?Integration into Education
You can share a video by sending the link (URL) to students or you can bookmark the video and bring it up in the classroom. There are other options available: embed or download the video.
You can embed a video in a blog, in a PowerPoint, in a website, or in the media libray in Blackboard. When a video is embedded the student just has to click play and watch it. This means 24/7 access for the learner. Sample uses for embedded videos -
- Students could be asked to search for videos on a particular topic and embed them in a class blog in order to have them available as learning resources. Involve them in researching and evaluating videos as learning tools.
- If you embed a video you could ask the student to view it and apply learnings in an assignment (journal, blog). They could answer a set of questions and be prepared to come to class for a discussion on the topic. If the video is a tutorial, then they could apply their learning by completing a task.
- YouTube or other online video sharing sites may be blocked at some institutions. If you download the video you can access it when you need it.
- You may not have internet access in some locations. This is not an issue with your download.
Find a video on YouTube ot TeacherTube and embed it in your next blog.
Activity #2 - Download a video
Find a video to download to your computer.
You can download a video from YouTube and other online video sharing sites using a third-party site. In the video below you will see a tutorial on how to download from KEEPVID and PWNYouTube is also in the video, but it may not be as predictable (i.e. it wasn't working a few months ago but seems okay now).
Activity #3 - Tell us about your experience
Remember to embed a video in your blog and tell us about embedding or downloading videos. Ideas for your blog -
- Why did you choose the video that you embedded?
- How did you find the process for embedding?
- Any issues while downloading a video?
- In what ways could you use these techniques to enhance learning in your classroom?
