When you say online video the first thing that comes to mind for most people is YouTube. YouTube is a video-sharing website where you can find everything from A to Z. It is a place where people can upload, view and share video clips. In this session you will look at exploring videos, joining YouTube and leaving a comment on a video.
Integration into Education
Online video can be a wonderful resource for you and your students:
- To help explain Web 2.0 tools we used Common Craft videos in some of our blogs
- If you have access to the internet and an LCD projector in your classroom you can show videos as part of your presentation
- You can e-mail links to videos to students or colleagues and later have a discussion or refer to them in a lecture.
- If you use Blackboard or other learning management systems you can embed video or provide the URL to students
- Instructors or students can upload videos to be shared on YouTube or other video sharing sites.
Go to YouTube and look for videos that may be of interest. You might look for videos related to the subject you teach, or something related to a subject (related to education) of interest. At the bottom of each video take note of the information that is available: ratings, number of times the video has been viewed, and comments. If you look to the column on the right-hand side of the screen you can find more videos uploaded by the same person and just below that are related videos.

Activity #2 - Create an account and post a comment
To create a YouTube account click sign in (upper right-hand corner of home page) and follow the directions. Remember to record your username and password!
When you have an account set up rate and leave a comment on at least one video.
Activity #3 - Tell us about your experience
In your blog tell us about your experience with YouTube. You can talk about:
- types of videos you looked at
- ease or difficulty of doing a search
- what it was like rating and leaving a comment
- or anything else that comes to mind in regards to online videos :-)
There are other online video sharing sites that may interest you: TeacherTube and SchoolTube.
I found this video to have a unique perspective on YouTube - An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube. Warning - it is a one-hour video!
