Podcatchers (i.e., podcasting software)
Podcatchers are software applications that help you find, download, organize, and play podcasts. If you want to access podcasts, you should get a podcatcher.
- Download iTunes for Mac or PC: iTunes is best known as an application for organizing and playing music, but you can also use it to find, subscribe to, and listen to/watch podcasts.
- Download Juice for Mac, PC, or Linux: this is one of the most popular podcatchers and it includes a built-in directory with thousands of listed podcast feeds.
- PodcatcherMatrix: a site that helps you "compare, choose, and discuss the various Podcatchers and their features."
Finding and subscribing to podcasts
There are many podcast directories on the web that help you find the podcasts that interest you. With access to more than 85,000 podcasts, Podcast.com might just be the biggest. A lot of content providers also list their podcasts on their websites, see cbc.ca/podcasting for example.
If you want to keep things simple, use your podcatcher to search for and subscribe to podcasts. Most podcatchers connect you to podcast directories and let you subscribe to podcasts (or download individual podcast episodes) with just the click of a button. iTunes, for example, lets you search for podcasts by keywords or browse by subject (Comedy, Education, Health, etc.) or by provider (e.g., The New York Times, the NHL, etc.).
